Serial Connection/ Arduino / Node.js

So I attempted to create some kind of serial connection between an arduino (with a button/LED) and node.js using javascript. I tried a few different sample codes I found on the internet, but could not get anything to work. Here is the documentation for the one I spent the most time trying to get to work:
